BATH SALT ADDICTION

Bath salt addiction has nothing to do with soaking in a bathtub. Bath salts are synthetic drugs that can possibly cause delirium and hallucinations. The term “bath salt” is a slang term used to refer to any number of compounds that are derived from cathinones.

One of the dangers of using bath salts is that no safe amount of any of the synthetic stimulants has been determined. Additionally, since bath salts are produced illegally, there is very little quality control on their production. Therefore, the content and purity of bath salts purchased on the street is unknown to the user and probably even to the seller. The DEA eventually caught-on and started investigating these newly synthesized substances and was horrified by what they found. Not only were bath salts found to be dangerous to the mental and physical health of those who use them, but they were found to be highly addictive.

Bath salt addiction was, in many cases, found to be more destructive than methamphetamine and cocaine addiction. Bath salt addicts tend to display paranoia, hallucinations, aggressive behavior – including suicidal and homicidal behavior – and exhibit poor hygiene. Bath salt users can even develop heart irregularities, panic attacks and insomnia. Since bath salts are generally combined with other substances, the injection of them can cause blood clots, heart, lung and brain problems, and infections. Since bath salts are stimulants, a frequent side-effects are agitation and weight loss.

Once the DEA began investigating the synthetic cathinones, it immediately banned many of them. Bath salts were added to the DEA’s Scheduled I Narcotics list and stiff penalties were created for those manufacturing, distributing, or possessing them. Despite this swift legal maneuver, bath salts can still be readily found in many areas.

BATH SALT ADDICTION TREATMENT

Because a person who enters recovery from bath salts can avoid paranoia, hallucinations, infections and death, it is paramount that bath salt addicts enter treatment as soon as possible. Drug addiction treatment can be a life-saving event for one with a bath salt addiction. There are qualified drug rehabs that are specifically suited to treat bath salt addiction. The effective treatment of synthetic drug addiction requires knowledgeable and skilled medical, nursing, and counseling staff. Even after completing an inpatient or residential drug and alcohol rehab, it is likely that further drug treatment be sought in an outpatient drug treatment center.
