FIORICET & FIORINAL ADDICTION

photo of many different types of drugs in pill and tablet form

Fioricet is a combination drug that contains butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine. Fiorinal is similar to Fioricet, but it contains aspirin instead of acetaminophen. Even though Fioricet and Fiorinal are not opiate pain pills, they both contain butalbital, which is a barbiturate and a controlled substance. As such, it falls under the narcotic prescription pain pill category and its use can lead to either a Fioricet or Fiorinal addiction. Fioricet and Fiorinal are pain pills and, buy unlike the prescription opiate pain pills, they are prescribed for very specific types of pain, generally headaches.

Barbiturates, like opiates, are addictive and fall under the sedative and antianxiety category of drugs. An addiction to barbiturates is similar to a benzodiazepine – benzo – addiction. Barbiturates are less safe than benzodiazepines because the threshold of the effective dosage versus the dosage needed to cause an overdose are very close; whereas, the effective dosage of a benzodiazepine is much father from the dosage needed to cause an overdose.

The withdrawal from opiate pain pill addiction is usually severe and extremely uncomfortable, but it is rarely fatal. But withdrawal from either Fioricet or Fiorinal addiction, which are barbiturates can sometimes be fatal. When a user attempts to withdrawal from either a Fioricet or Fiorinal addiction, the body enters a state of hyperexcitability because the sedative action of the barbiturate has been removed. This causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, dehydration, sweating, shaking and can also lead to seizures, heart attack and stroke.

Unfortunately, because many, including medical professionals, do not understand the severe nature of sedative withdrawal and may not understand that Fioricet and Fiorinal contain a barbiturate, this pain pill addiction can go undetected for an extended period. For those with a Fioricet and/or Fiorinal addiction who choose to enter an inpatient or residential drug detox, they must be careful to inform the physician that these drugs contain a barbiturate and not an opiate to ensure that they receive the correct detox procedure.

Inpatient and residential drug detox for the initial treatment of Fioricet and Fiorinal addiction is paramount and can be lifesaving. After the drug detox process is complete, it is likely that continued treatment in a drug rehab will be recommended. In drug rehab, one will gain the skills and strength necessary to enter a recovery lifestyle.
