NITRITES & POPPERS ADDICTION

A Day at Drug and Alcohol Rehab at Behavioral Wellness & Recovery

Although nitrites, in the form of amyl nitrite, are a legally prescribed prescription medication for the treatment of angina (poor blood flow to the heart muscle with resultant chest pain) and for use during cardiac arrest, they are also abusable in the form of poppers. Poppers are a form of inhalants that are abused to gain excitation and euphoria, especially in sexual situations or in clubs.

Other nitrites that are formulated into poppers are butyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite, isopropyl nitrite and even cyclohexyl nitrite. Because it is illegal to sell nitrites for human consumption, poppers are frequently and conveniently sold as video head cleaners, computer cleaners, or room odorizers.

Poppers cause euphoria, increase sexual desire, and relax the muscles of the anus and vagina. They may be used in dance clubs and at raves, but are most typically used to increase sexual gratification. It is not uncommon to abuse other drugs while also engaging in popper abuse.

Because the nitrites cause the blood vessels to dilate, one can experience headaches, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness and even pass out when using poppers. An overdose of poppers, or amyl nitrite, can cause respiratory problems and cardiac abnormalities and puts those with underlying medical problems at serious risk.

Some nitrites, such as amyl nitrite and butyl nitrite have been listed as causes of SSDS (sudden sniffing death syndrome). This is when a cardiac arrhythmia occurs during the process of inhalant abuse and leads to a cardiac arrest and death.

Even though there are ample reports of lung, heart, liver, red blood cell, immune, and even potentially brain problems with the long-term use of poppers, there are those who are unable or unwilling to stop using them for recreational purposes.

Amyl nitrite is available as a prescription drug in the United States, but its use is prohibited and illegal otherwise. But, there are other nitrites (see above) that are legal to manufacture, sell, and possess that are used as popper substitutes. Poppers are typically sold in sex shops or at certain clubs and are not difficult to find.

The signs and symptoms of a popper addiction or popper abuse include:

  • Poppers being used regularly, stored around the house, in pockets and in bags
  • Cloths soaked in the liquid
  • A strong smell of poppers on clothing, the person, or in the house
  • Irritation around the nose and mouth
  • A flushed face and uncontrollable laughter
  • Mood swings

NITRITE & POPPER ADDICTION TREATMENT

In treating a poppers addiction, not only does the addiction require treatment, but the origin of the addiction should be examined closely as well. If the addiction is intertwined with a sexual background, simultaneous treatment for a sexual addiction may be required.

In anyone who abuses inhalants, other substance addictions should also be ruled out. If an addiction to another substance is identified, treatment of both addictions should occur at the same time. All psychosocial factors must be taken into consideration, as the relapse rate for inhalation addiction is high, especially if the recovery environment is not stable.

For those with a poppers addiction, psychosocial stressors, and other addictions, residential drug rehab or inpatient detox is frequently the initial recommended level of care.
