therapy and counseling for drug addiction and alcoholism in PhiladelphiaTherapy and counseling are oftentimes used interchangeably. To complicate matters more, the licensure, titles, certificates, and required degrees in each state may differ. Both involve talking with a trained professional about one’s current life situation and working together to resolve the issues at hand. In some states, certain licensures permit the mental health professional to diagnose mental health issues, and sometimes even prescribe a limited number of medications.

The types are therapists and counselors are widely varied, and include Physicians, A.R.N.P.’s, Ph.D.’s, Psy. D.’s, Psychologists, Social Workers, Substance Abuse Counselors, and Mental Health Therapists. Considerable overlap exists between these professions. However, the goal of each is the same: to help the patient achieve a stable, health, and enjoyable life and to develop positive coping skills to deal with life stressors.

Counseling, or therapy, is when a professional gives assistance to the patient to help him/her resolve personal, social, psychological, and/or emotional problems. There are many different types of therapy, as well as different modalities of talk therapy. Nontraditional modalities of therapy may also be offered, such as recreation, music, or movement therapy, and specific therapies for PTSD and phobias.

It is important to note that not any one type of therapy, or counseling, works for every addict or alcoholic. Particular care should be taken when selecting the appropriate modality of therapy for a patient who suffers from a dual diagnosis disorder.

Substance abuse and mental health counseling are the mainstay of substance abuse treatment. When appropriate and effective counseling is provided, in conjunction with medical and psychiatric care and prescribed medications, recovery from drug and alcohol addiction can be achieved.
