THERAPY AND COUNSELING

The types of therapists and counselors are widely varied, and include Physicians, A.R.N.P.’s, Ph.D.’s, Psy. D.’s, Psychologists, Social Workers, Substance Abuse Counselors, and Mental Health Therapists. Considerable overlap exists between these professions. However, the goal of each is the same: to help the patient achieve a stable, health, and enjoyable life and to develop positive coping skills to deal with life stressors.
It is important to note that not any one type of therapy, or counseling, works for every addict or alcoholic. Particular care should be taken when selecting the appropriate modality of therapy for a patient who suffers from a dual diagnosis disorder.
Substance abuse and mental health counseling are the mainstay of substance abuse treatment. When appropriate and effective counseling is provided, in conjunction with medical and psychiatric care and prescribed medications, recovery from drug and alcohol addiction can be achieved.
